In 2022, I hired Justin Bonura and his partner Matt Lin to build an addition to my home stating a 16 week timeframe that ended up being 20 weeks overdue and over budget by $10-15k. While some of the initial workmanship of the framing was high quality, we encountered a number of struggles with the way Justin and Matt managed the lifespan of the project. Below are the highlights of our struggles. To read more detail, see below descriptions.

    1. Inconsistent/No work schedule; Large gaps in work
    2. Lack of project management, communication with workers, presence during inspections
    3. No attention to detail or communication with homeowner before purchasing materials
    4. Use of unlicensed professionals causing gas leak
    5. 6 month delay in fixing leaks due to the job
    6. Projects having to be redone elsewhere on homeowner’s dime
    7. Deceitful invoices

    1. Throughout the process, there was no plan, no schedule for subcontractors or J&M workers so I had no way to plan to arrange logistics at home. He decided at 6am each morning which of his projects would get a crew and which wouldn’t. People would show up or they wouldn’t in a given day, there was no heads up. Many times there was no one working for weeks at a time, especially after he had my last deposit.

    2. Justin will lie/gaslight repeatedly when you ask him for real updates on materials ordered, est time to project end, when bedrooms and closets will be put back together, you name it. You will be his unpaid foreman, where you must work from home each day and direct/police his team, to ensure the project is done correctly. Neither Justin or Matt were ever present for an inspection, leaving it all on the homeowner to be present and available to escort the inspectors around.

    3. Even with a list of parts/materials with direct links provided to Justin 5-6 months in advance, he still ordered incorrect materials. Before purchasing materials for the project, there was little to no communication to ensure everyone was in agreement on everything. This led to incorrect materials purchased (e.g., interior doors that did not match the rest of the house) or failure to obtain necessary materials in time for inspections and therefore, wasted time, work, and money.

    4. When their workers started walking off jobs because they weren’t being paid, they sent unqualified and unlicensed workers. At one point we had car detailers patching our ceiling, leading to them having to send other workers to redo it. When the plumber walked, they sent unlicensed plumbers to finish the laundry room, which resulted in something no one would ever expect (See laundry sink pictures) and also caused a gas leak which we woke up to the following morning with 2 children under 4 in the house.

    5. In the beginning of the project, we had rain damage in our main living and dining space, including water dripping out of our ceiling lights. After repeatedly asking for this to be fixed, it took 6 months for them to do anything about it.

    6. I had to redo the master shower and the mud room due to poor quality work and incorrect materials. Total extra cost to me out of pocket - $10k.

    7. He will also try to sneak things into invoices.
He put a tax on my invoices of approx $7k-8k. Capital improvements to a home are non-taxable in NJ.

If you think you are saving money with his lower bid, trust me you aren’t. It’s unfortunate because his framers are very good and he also has some good subs. Dealing with this company was the most challenging experience of my adult life. I tried to help him be successful where I could but now I feel it is more important to warn others so their family won’t suffer like mine did.

Very pleased and satisfied with the quality, value and speed my 50 year old roof was replaced. A professional and contentious contractor that I would use again, and certainly would recommend.

Justin was very responsive, he fit my roof project into their schedule quicker than the roofer who was supposed to do the work but kept on delaying it. Would certainly recommend.
