I would have to say my experience here was the best under the circumstances. My Grandmothers service would have to have been perfect in every way. The day was beautiful and with slight rain followed by a rainbow. It was a beautiful day. The landscaping was amazingly done. Simply beautiful. I will be looking into my own plot here.
Kensico is one of the largest and most beautiful cemeteries I have visited. It contains the great Lou Gehrig and other famous people like Anne Bancroft and Danny Kaye among others..
Kensico was established in 1889 under the Rural Cemetery Act of 1847, a legislative response to overcrowded urban burial grounds. The cemetery originally spanned 250 acres of rolling farmland. By 1905, Kensico expanded to 600 acres, though it was later reduced to 461 acres when part of the land was sold to the neighboring Gate of Heaven Cemetery in 1912.
The grounds were designed with a park-like aesthetic: winding lanes, ponds, shade trees, and statuary that evoke both serenity and grandeur. It is much more peaceful than the flat lawn-like cemeteries but it does make finding your way a bit more challenging.
Notable interments include composer Sergei Rachmaninoff, actress Anne Bancroft, author Ayn Rand, and Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig.
I would like to compliment Kathy Caucci who works in the office at Kensico Cemetery. I stopped last week after visiting my aunt and uncles grave. There were some overgrown bushes that needed to be taken care of. She offered to have them removed for me.
I was very impressed how professional and helpful she was. She was a pleasure to talk to and I really appreciate her efforts.
Thanks again Kathy!
I visited this cemetery for the internment of my dearly beloved brother in law. He was a sweet soul and it is sad to go through this grieving process. The scenery was breathtaking and the graves, the lawn mausoleums, and crypts showed how people cared for those whom they loved and cherish. Not much to say but the burial site workers were very hardworking and respectful.
