The library is a lovely place to visit. It has lots of windows which allows lots of light in and allows visitors to look out the windows to view the trees that surround the building. It's is confusing to a newcomer, however. There's limited parking in front but there's actually parking in the back which is not well marked for newcomers. Likewise, the front entrance is reached by an uphill path and steps which are not Senior or handicap friendly. There is a ground floor entrance in the back but it's also not clearly marked. I didn't see any elevator on the upper floor so I don't know how a person in a wheel chair or on crutches would get upstairs. There were only stairs connecting the different levels. There seemed to be only one bathroom, which is a problem when it's occupied. There were 2 private study rooms on the upper floor which is a plus. I didn't visit the ground floor so I can't talk about what it is like.
I absolutely love the building and everything the Locust Valley Library has to offer — from its beautiful architecture to the great selection of books and resources.
However, I do wish the staff would adhere more closely to traditional library ethics. It can sometimes feel more like a café than a library, with staff talking loudly or not being mindful of the need for quiet. A little more attention to maintaining a calm and respectful atmosphere would really enhance the experience for everyone who comes here to read, study, or simply enjoy the peaceful environment a library is meant to provide.
What a unique edifice for a public library! I found the grounds nicely decorated and green. Probably the greenest grounds to a library that I've yet seen. I found the children's section a little tight. Plenty of parking. I did find the little bench outside to be very cute.
Visited last week for a free concert performance in the basement theatre area. Had a most enjoyable time and will be more vigilent in future about the goings-on at local libraries. Thanks to the library staff. Also, very adequate parking areas around the building.
This library is beautiful but it's really their director and staff that sets them apart! I received exceptional support and assistance at Locust Valley Library, they are truly dedicated to everyone who comes through their doors.
