Stepping into the New York Aquarium feels like diving straight into a living, breathing seascape. The dimly lit corridors open up to glowing tanks where corals flicker with colour and schools of fish drift like moving paintings. One highlight was the shark conservation gallery—an immersive space where mobiles of marine species rotate overhead, reminding us that “Healthy oceans need sharks.” It’s educational, atmospheric, and surprisingly calming.
The tanks themselves are full of character. From the curious, broad-headed fish staring straight back at visitors, to the quiet drama of river species weaving between submerged roots, each display feels like its own self-contained world. The lighting, especially the emerald shimmer from the shark tunnel, creates an almost cinematic experience.
Outdoor areas add a different rhythm. The Sea Lion Celebration show brings playful energy, where trainers interact with the animals through musical demonstrations. Even waiting outside the venue, the signage and coastal wind set a light, cheerful mood.
One unexpected gem was the story of deep-sea pioneers William Beebe and Otis Barton. Seeing the historic Bathysphere and the archival images felt like a small museum within the larger aquarium—a reminder that ocean exploration is as much about human curiosity as marine life itself.
What also stood out was how the aquarium integrates art, science, and environment: sculptural wall installations of schooling fish, colourful coral-themed silhouettes, and even atmospheric outdoor landscapes that shift with the season. The golden grasses swaying near the exit added a final soft, autumnal touch.
Overall, the New York Aquarium isn’t just a place to see marine animals—it’s a layered experience of conservation, history, and quiet reflection. Compact yet rich, educational yet visually engaging, it makes for a rewarding half-day escape by the ocean in Coney Island. Perfect for anyone looking to learn, wander, and reconnect with the underwater worlds that sustain us.
Our family came to the aquarium with our four little ones. We absolutely loved the time watching the sea lion show. We enjoyed the shark exhibit and all the others as well. We only spent about 1.5 hours here but we were able to see most things pretty well with a group of small kids. There is a great spot to park strollers when needed and also they have a place you can buy souvenirs. We did also visit the play area they had that was themed like underwater and had lots of fish.
I didnt think this place was small, as others have described. There are indoor and outdoor exhibits and an indoor, small kids play area. The touch tank was closed, so that was a bummer, but the tanks are lovely. Great place to take the kids, or even enjoy as an adult or a daytime date!
The aquarium itself is wonderful and was beautifully structured. Some old displays were beautifully restored and it was a wonderful nostalgia feeling visiting after a 13 year gap.
I gave it four stars bc the food made us sick, specifically the chicken tenders. Our friends had the burgers and they were fine. Just be weary of those with sensitive tummies. We usually handle fast food fine, this day was just not a good day for it.
Some staff seemed very depressed or aimless. It was something I wasn’t used to being my prior visits always had chipper staff. The best staff we met were the ladies by the touch tank.
Sea lion show has become shorter and lackluster. Honestly they should get rid of it and give the animals their space to swim. I’d personally love for them make it like the shark tank.
It’s a small aquarium and the price may be high but it goes to supporting the animals.
We visited the aquarium in the middle of the week, and it was an absolute delight! The place wasn’t overly crowded, allowing us to thoroughly enjoy all the exhibits. My personal favorites were the sharks (especially the albino), octopus, stingrays, penguins, sea lions, seals, otters, and jellyfish.
While the aquarium may not be massive, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. They have two gift shops with a variety of unique souvenirs. However, the cafe offers limited food options, so it might be better to bring your own snacks.
We highly recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. Overall, we left the aquarium feeling incredibly happy and relaxed. The friendly and helpful staff made the experience even more enjoyable.
