I called ahead because there’s just one person there and it was fantastic! I was offered to look around or for a tour and I was shown everything they had in the closet as well as on display. Can’t wait to come back to NYC to visit again. Stunning art in such a variety you don’t want to miss!

The proprietor was so warm and inviting. Learned so much about African American art. Definitely worth a visit! I even found street parking....maybe a rarity.

Essie Green Galleries contains some of the most beautiful and unknown art work by prominent Black artists. It was founded with the guidance of Romare Bearden, a close friend of the late Essie Green, and its collection has expanded to include works from 19th-century artists to contemporary pieces. At their receptions, you'll see works by the likes of Charles Alston, Jacob Lawrence, Allen Stringfellow, Norman Lewis, Charles Porter, etc. You may also schedule an appointment for a visit. As a native Harlemite, I am happy that this jewel still exists in Harlem!
