Joining JazzLab was the best musical decisions I've made in a long time. Russ is an awesome teacher / guide...patient, knowledgable, highly accomplished with zero pretense. His ability to dissect a song and make it approachable as a learning tool for everyone has been a game changer for me.
I have played trumpet/flugelhorn in JazzLabNY for the past year and love it.
Russ Nolan is not only a great sax player but a great teacher and knows how to explain things in a very easy to understand manor.
The program is also very affordable when compared to other similar programs.
Another thing I love about it is that we perform in a real venue in midtown Manhattan with a full back end sound system.
I've been participating in the NY Jazz Lab program with Russ, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Russ is a fantastic teacher—knowledgeable, dedicated, and committed. He's friendly and genuinely cares about his students and their journey in jazz.
Russ assembles bands and guides them through rehearsals every two weeks, with performances every few months. His method is practical and leads to significant improvement. It's been a great experience, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning and growing in jazz.
Russ is an unbelievably talented musician and an even better teacher for my continued studies to further develop my jazz knowledge. He can pinpoint my creative skilled areas previously developed for years and utilize those to help me understand the jazz theory side of which I was lacking and had a ton of room for growth. Russ has a way of simplifying very complex rhythms in a way that makes my musical journey feel a lot more attainable. I would recommend Russ Nolan to any adult looking to expand their jazz vocabulary in very fun and collaborative manner.
JazzLabNY is a very cool way for aspiring musicians to have a forum to learn how to play jazz and become a member of a bonafide ensemble that plays together on a regular basis. Having an outlet to play with other musicians in a real playing situation is really what is enabling me to take my playing to the next level. Not only am I inspired to play more, work on my chops, learn tunes, but I am able to engage with other musicians who are doing the same. Russ has created something very unique - a great way to teach jazz, bring musicians together in a very supportive environment and enable everyone to have fun! If you are looking for a way to connect with other jazz musicians, you should definitely check out JazzLabNY.
