Matteo is one of a kind. There’s a fundamental difference between being able to do something at a high level and being able to teach that same thing at a high level. In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are many, many more world-class practitioners than there are truly world-class teachers. Matteo is both.
His method of demonstration, explanation, and reinforcement is unmatched. He has a unique ability to identify the smallest details in your movement, correct them over time, and guide you toward technical precision. At the same time, he’s systematically expanding your game—layering in new concepts and strategies in a way that’s not just theoretical, but immediately implementable.
One of the things that makes Matteo exceptional is his path. He worked incredibly hard and spent years learning from many different instructors—some effective, many ineffective. Rather than being held back by that, he deconstructed what worked, isolated the useful lessons and styles of coaching, and built them into his own teaching method. The result is that you don’t have to tread those same inefficient waters of being “shown” without being taught.
He also tailors his instruction to you—your game, your goals, and your abilities, both physical and otherwise. Whether it’s refining a single detail, building a broader system, or simply helping you grow in the art, Matteo customizes everything so the path forward is clear and achievable.
What sets Matteo apart is his teaching process: he demonstrates, he explains, and then he drills with you in a way that burns the lesson into both your memory and your muscles. The result is real progress, session after session, with skills that actually stick.
As an additional bonus, Matteo is exceptionally earnest and wise for his years. He is thoughtful about the role Jiu-Jitsu plays in personal development and the broader ideals of growing as a human being beyond the mat. This thoughtfulness and care come through in his coaching because he’s not just teaching you a collection of techniques—he’s conveying a way to live, a way to view yourself, and a way to take pride in your growth as a martial artist.
As a 47-year-old lawyer who came to Jiu-Jitsu late in life but has practiced in other areas at a high level, I can say with full confidence: people like Matteo are incredibly rare.
Coach Mateo Martinez is the real deal.
Every time I train 1-on-1 with Mateo, my game levels up. He focuses on the finer details that most people overlook, and he makes sure I truly understand the "why" behind every technique. Whether we’re doing hard warm-ups, intense drilling, or tough rolls, he adapts each session to fit exactly what I need to grow.
What I appreciate most is that Mateo doesn’t just throw techniques at you, he helps build a system for long-term success. He lives by the mindset that “rule number one is to believe in yourself, to be a disciple of discipline, and to improve positively, even if it’s just 1%, because that growth compounds daily.” That shows in every session. His attention to detail, structured approach, and deep knowledge of Jiu-Jitsu make him one of the best coaches out there.
If you’re serious about improving your BJJ, training with Mateo is a must.
The coaching and community here are amazing. If you are looking to get into Bjj I would highly recommend this place. Coach Filipe does a great job in getting you better every day as well as creating a fun and positive environment. I couldn’t recommend this place enough!
The Haus is an amazing place to train, I've been going there for years and have gotten stronger and made life long friends. If you are in Westchester, this is THE PREMIER PLACE to go. Their teachers are fantastic, professional, and they have hours for everyone. Their prices are more than fair too and have remained that way since I've been a student.
Jiu Jitsu Haus has great instructors and an amazing community. The owner/head coach is encouraging, welcoming, and knows his stuff! As a woman, I first felt intimidated to get into BJJ. Here at Jiu Jitsu Haus, I feel safe and comfortable. They’re the only gym in the area offering a women’s only class too! And on top of that it is taught by a female coach! This place is definitely a hidden gem that I hope more people find out about! I can’t recommend them enough!
