After our 2018 H38E trawler came out winter storage in Maryland, the Northern Lights 5kw generator would not start. It was eight years old, though only 300 hours showed on the tachometer. The commissioning yard mechanics tried several approaches, including replacing the lift pump, checking all the relays, and multiple times bleeding it. After eight days with no improvement, they suggested that they could not fix it. I did some online research and found Ocean Power in Point Pleasant, NJ.
Calling them, I started talking with Herman, the owner and boss. I explained the problem and said that we are 250 miles away in a boat that cruises at eight knots. It would be a while until we could get there. He asked me to keep him advised of our location, which I did.
The weather was uncooperative, and it took a while. Stopping at another well-known marina, I had this mechanic check out the generator. This mechanic spent a while diagnosing and decided that two of the “injectors were bad.” The replacement would take a week or so and cost about two thousand dollars.
Facing another week of sitting in a large marina and spending two grand with the hopes that that would solve it, I declined.
Some three weeks after our original contact, we tied up in a marina near Point Pleasant, New Jersey. The Ocean Power mechanic named Grant showed up the following Monday morning. He spent about three hours checking different things and talking to the shop. He proposed two courses of action: remove the generator, take it to his shop, and rebuild it, then reinstall it, or… install a new one.
Removing the existing generator, working on it, and reinstalling it would be expensive and take at least a week. Removing the old and replacing it with a new one, would be more expensive, though could be done in two days.
We went with the new and it was in and operating in 36 hours. I’m glad we did.
The mechanics who did the work and the office people were totally professional. They arranged a giant forklift to move the old generator out and the new one in. There were just inches to spare and there were no problems. The installation was done, he set up the new generator, and it works like a champ.
Ocean Power is a family business, started by Herman in the 1980s, and two sons and a daughter work there now. They are a pleasure to work with.
If you have a problem with your generator, (Northern Lights, Onan, and others), and you’re in the New Jersey area, connect with Ocean Power.

I had a generator that was constantly not working. Had it “checked out” a few times. Ocean power came and repaired it. They also gave me some important help understanding it with some preventive maintenance. They then did some work on my two mains because I didn’t realize there was an issue about to be a problem. Professional, polite, helpful. I will come to mid New Jersey just to get them to check my engines out annually. Highly recommend these guys.
