I had switched from distance running to interval training right around my 50th birthday. I believe this decision saved my legs. Unfortunately, last July I exacerbated partially torn meniscus, my right knee swelled and in no time I the joint did not support normal activities let alone running. Dr. Owens and I had met years ago as we ran for the same club. Over the years I referred one or two patients to him who were pleased with his surgical repairs. On the recommendation of our mutual former running coach, also a patient of his, I had Dr. Owens repair my meniscus and a bone defect in the same knee. He understood how important my training was to the quality of my life and was unwavering in his assurance that I'd be back sprinting in short order. He was spot on. What I found endearing about Dr. Owens was that he was calm and patient answering my questions and was very conscientious calling me to follow up on the weekend after my Friday surgery to see how I was feeling. He was very reassuring and normalized the post surgical pains that accompany the healing process. Dr. Owens had so many years of experience as a runner and a surgeon that he was able to guide me at every juncture in my rehab process on what it was okay for me to do without jeopardizing my recovery. I was operated on on August 7th. Today at 66 years old i'm sprinting with supreme confidence and trust in my joints as I've so much stronger after physical therapy than I was before my injury.
Went in to see Dr. Owens barely able to walk. He ordered MRI and took an x ray, both of which diagnosed me with spinal herniation. Sent me home on crutches. Prescribed physical therapy and within two weeks was able to run and resume some normal activities with minimal pain. Within a month I was in no pain and running and cycling daily. Within 3 months I was entering road races and fully resumed normal heavy training and in great shape. 3 years later I still have to be careful with my back but never anywhere near as bad as I was before treatment.
Dr. John Owens is incompetent, negligent or just doesn’t care. My elderly Mother fell partially down a staircase and was in a lot of pain and could barely move without hurting. He ordered x-rays of spine, but not hips?? She was 80 yrs old. His report was severe arthritis and prescribed codiene with Tylenol. A few months later, still in severe pain, pain medication not helping and she went from working 4 days a week to not barely able to go food shopping 1x per week. She was also walking off gait.
We went back to him and he still did not change his plan for her. He refused an MRI, but then agreed after insistence of her children.
Over 1 year later her new primary care physician saw her walk and ordered hip xray. She had an old fracture in her hip.
He is extremely arrogant as well and he has no reason to be. He is a completely incompetent orthopedic dr and he has horrible bedside manner.
