For the past four years, my son has had the incredible privilege of studying drum set with Scott Strunk. More than just a teacher, Scott has been a mentor, a guide, and a steady presence in my son’s life. Through every lesson, he’s given my son far more than just musical instruction—he’s offered wisdom, encouragement, and a belief in his potential that has truly helped shape who he is today.
Under Scott’s guidance, my son hasn’t just grown as a drummer—he’s grown as a person. Scott helped him channel his talent, face challenges with confidence, and stay focused on his dreams. Thanks in large part to that support and teaching, my son has thrived—performing with the PHS Studio Band, Jazz House Kids, earning scholarships (including 2 full tuition scholarships), and being accepted into some of the top college jazz programs in the country.
Scott, thank you for everything—for your time, your care, and the unwavering support you’ve shown him. Your impact is lasting, and we are deeply grateful for all you’ve done and continue to do as he steps into this exciting next chapter.
As one of the rarer adult students, I've taken lessons with Scott over the past 3 years. I'm now moving to a different state, so I think a review is due.
I can say that taking lessons with Scott is pretty much the optimal way for you to really get better at drums. His decades of teaching experience simply cannot be matched by other alternatives. He will know how you can optimally improve. He will make sure you have strong foundations like techniques, but will also make sure you're aware that these are only a small piece of the puzzle that is the subtle art of drumming.
For the past 3 years, I've improved dramatically as a drummer. This was the first time I was exposed to structured and principled drum teaching. Every penny and second spent on Scott's lessons are well spent, so if you're considering go for it.
Moreover, Scott is a wonderful human being. He has been a drum instructor, a life mentor, and a friend to me. I've learned a ton not only about drums but also life from him (and from drumming). His lessons have been a mental therapy that helped keep my sanity. I will miss taking lessons with him in person.
My son studied with Scott from when we moved to town in 5th grade through recently completed high school. He has always been patient and supportive, but also knows when to push to get the most out of the student when needed.
I've personally worked with a number of teachers over the years, and they showed me how to play some music, but Scott actually teaches how to be a Musician. Big difference.
I don't think my son would be nearly the player he is now without Scott's lessons. I also appreciate how as he got older, it was less of a teacher relationship and more of a guide/mentor.
I highly recommend Scott!
My son has taken drum lessons from Scott Strunk for 6 years. After two years, he placed into the top of six jazz bands at his high school as a freshman where he played drums on an album the band recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. He is entering his third year playing with a regional all-star college and high school jazz band that plays weekly during the summer at a jazz club in Philly and tours Italy for two weeks performing nightly shows (including at the Umbria Jazz Festival this year). None of this would have been possible without Scott’s experienced teaching methods that include his focus on fundamentals and use of his own book that works for all skill levels. He is a calm, patient teacher and runs his lessons as a well organized business complete with online scheduling and payment options. We couldn’t recommend him more!
If you want to learn drums or enroll your child in drums, this is the place to go! Scott has a great relationship with students and is very patient with his teaching. My son wanted to join school band as a percussionist but he had zero musical experience, and with Scott's help, within 8 months, he's outdoing his fellow percussionists that have been learning for 4+ years. Scott not only offers drum teaching, but even additional percussion instruments like mallets! He rocks!
