I've been getting my fishing/boating/hiking permits here since the 1980s. The property and the reservoir are some of the most pristine "wilderness" you will find in New Jersey. I only wish there were more security patrols to stop the destructive and disruptive trespassing by non-permitted swimmers, dog walkers, kayakers and dirt bikers that tear up the trails, crowd the parking lots at the boat launches and leave piles of garbage. I would pay more for the permits if they increased security .
Fishing is fantastic. The ramps could use a little dressing up. But that maybe be by design. I'd be careful loading in my high dollar bass boat if I had one, But I don't so it's not a problem for me.
Weekends can get a little busy but I guess that's everywhere these days.
A permit is required to hike, fish, hunt or trap in the Newark Watershed. Love the natural beauty and solitude of this place.
Great place to explore and hike
It's too bad that the Watershed and its staff have a history of such poor reviews. This place is amazing and top notch service, as far as I'm concerned. I've hiked all of the trails in this area and I've never had a bad experience. I've been to the office on several occasions and had a great time talking to the staff. During covid, when they were only open a few days a week and had long lines, the staff were coping well with the customer. The customers were the ones with the bad attitudes. But I digress. Actually, maybe it's good no one else discovers what a great place this is... I might actually have it all to myself. Suffice to say, we're lucky to have the wonderful natural resource as a playground in our backyard. HIGHLY recommended for hiking. MY PSA: Report ATV'ers on the weekends! They ruin the trails and fragile ecosystem and its illegal to 4-wheel anywhere in the watershed.
