I just had a great experience reporting a possible environmental hazard. I was promptly routed to the correct department, and someone in Albany dispatch gave me the direct number of my county's officer. Good job!

All right, first time I went to the DEC in person. I was asked to share a video I have of a bear carrying off the body of one of my goats, which I did. Now it seems that most of the people who work at the DEC are very ready to instruct and share information, but they are not really interested in helping folks with their wildlife problems. I am wondering if they are hoping for early bear season, which opened this last weekend, to take care of the problem, which it may well. However, here in the NewPaltz/Gardiner area several people have lost goats to bear predation over the last couple of months which was never a thing here before. My personal best guess is that this is all the work of one specific bear. At least seven goats, maybe more by now, have been lost. My main concern is, that this is an area high in tourists who have no wildlife experience and may be camping with little kids etc. I would hate for the bear problem to extend beyond goats. If it does, do know, that it had been brought to the attention of the DEC and they were not interested in doing anything about it.
