I did not know this prior, but the parking lot is a solid 0.3 of a mile from the visitor center. Keep that in mind if you cannot do far distances. Beach was a bit narrow from the dunes, so I'd call it a small beach. Dogs are not allowed on the Smith County beach, so you can only walk in one direction if you have your pup. Otherwise! Its a fantastic beach. I'd return again.

Friendly visitor center where ranger showed me how to get to the boardwalk trail and make an overall loop from the center to bay and return back via shore path. Scenery from boardwalk is very picturesque and I have thoroughly enjoyed this part of the hike. As I have moved from boardwalk to marsh part of the trail, things started to move quickly downhill with mosquitoes appearing out of nowhere in blazing sun with vengeance for incursion into their territory. I have immediately recalled Watch Hill campground walk attack by salt marsh mosquitoes in Fire Island and quickly got away to ocean side to finish off the loop. That’s the reason for one less star in my rating. Seriously, this kind of mosquitoes is worst I’ve ever seen, attacking as a swarm with kamikaze style in broad daylight… I’ve seen almost all maritime forests around Long Island and nothing comes close with Fire Island marshes in this respect.

Very beautiful place to watch the sunset. The nature hike from the side of the visitor center is a must do.

Exhibit hall on the 2nd floor has the great wide-open scenery. It has a little parking lot.

The visitors center was finally open again and had a sign posted offering various classes upcoming. There is also a little Museum above the visitor center, though im.not sure its opened. The path adjacent to the visitor center offers a beautiful and Scenic walk, partially boardwalk then in the sand. Views of Ocean, bay and beach.
