It has been a very long time since I visited a University. Now , with my grandchildren entering this world, I thought myself as holding their hand through these doors, instead they held mine as I walked slowly to their new beginning. I'm not going to lie, it was very emotional moment for me. To my surprise the school staff was prepared even for that. Very supportive, kind and understanding. I was not ready to walk long distances during the orientation due to my breathing difficulties/allergies, but they made sure I was informed of all that I "missed" and brought back together with the group when they returned to complete the event. Today, at the end of second week, I see my grandchildren so happy to be a part of this school and looking forward to all it has to offer. May God's blessing surrounds everyone at this Campus so they can all arrive at their destination, SUCCESS!
It was raining heavily today. The school's large parking lot is almost always full every day, so I can only choose to park in a farther parking lot and then walk to the classroom. So I brought an umbrella with me, otherwise my clothes would get wet. When I was almost at the classroom, I chose to go to the bathroom to put my umbrella away, because I didn't want to dirty the classroom floor with my umbrella. Because of this, when I came to get my umbrella after class, it was taken away. To be precise, it felt like it was taken away by the cleaner. After all, no one would be so poor as to steal an umbrella. Then I went to the library, hoping that the staff there could help me. But they said that they didn't know or have any contact with the cleaners of the new academic building. I also expressed my understanding, and then I asked for the phone number of their cleaning department, and they said they didn't have any. This surprised me a little that the administrators of a school had no contact information or communication channels with each other. Although this umbrella is not worth much even if it is new, this experience made me realize that if you leave some valuables in the classroom or bathroom or somewhere in the school in the future, the school may not be able to find them for you. This experience made me very disappointed. From now on, I will bring my umbrella into the classroom no matter how dirty it is.
This is a great institution for the pursuit of higher learning, individual development, and fulfillment of academic pursuit. To come here is to discover the motivation to achieve the accomplishment of getting a degree. The staff and faculty are beyond helpful and encouraging of the students. I have attended larger and smaller SUNY institutions before coming to this SUNY university and have found my true place in SUNY at SUNY Old Westbury.
The bad reviews are outdated - the school has done a lot to improve the campus for both residents and commuters. I transferred here 2 years ago from a different school, and am really so happy with my decision.
The campus is beautiful and makes you forget that you're still on Long Island. You'll find some professors you don't love anywhere, but to my surprise I've met some of the best I've ever had (better than the private school I transferred from)
Making friends as a commuter could be hard for some, but the people I've met here are kinder and friendlier than anywhere else I've been.
Yes, some of the buildings are a bit run down, and yes the school doesn't have an A++ reputation. But it really defied my expectations for a lesser known SUNY school.
If you're debating it, just know a bunch of people in your position were also just as skeptical - it's not that bad :)
