We came to Angeloni's to try the Thinny thin pizza. We ordered a half pie with pepperoni. As an appetizer we ordered the most amazing mozzarella sticks and calamari. The true treat of the night is meeting the two brothers and the amazing service and enjoying dinner with a fantastic view at a place where you truly you are treated like family I highly recommend coming here not just for the food but for the atmosphere and the two amazing owners of the restaurant.
This review is for the pizza 🍕 only!
ONE BITE, EVERYONE KNOWS THE RULES. Dave gave the Caldwell location an 8.8 so of course I HAD to try the location that just opened up here in Sparta while I was visiting family during Thanksgiving. I got the Thiny Thin with cheese, the Thiny Thin with Pepperoni and the Sweet Cups of Spice Pizza. All three were DELICIOUS! The crust was super crispy, the cheese had no drip of oils, the pepperoni edges were perfectly "burnt". The Cups of Spice had the perfect blend of sweet and spice. There was no flop at all and the undercarriage was cooked perfectly. I highly recommend!!
My score: 8.7!!
When I heard from a friend that the pizza was comparable to Café Crevier in Denville, I canceled my original pizza plans to give Angeloni’s a shot.
Pickup Experience:
Once you walk in, you’re met with an awkward, cramped layout. There’s a bathroom in the same corner as the entrance, so anyone going in or out of that bathroom has to push through the mob of people. You’re constantly trying to find a better place to stand as more people arrive to pick up their orders. The Christmas tree and Santa decorations felt in the way which were nice but didn't help given the layout. They were fairly busy but didn’t seem overwhelmed. Service and friendliness were on par with typical NJ/NY standards. However, the interior looked very nice and seemed like it would be a great sit-down experience.
The Food:
The quality of the ingredients and the potential are there, but the two pies I ordered were incredibly underwhelming. The mushrooms on the Blooming Shroom and the caramelized onions on The Artisan were few and far between—both smothered by an unrelenting amount of arugula. For quality, craft pizza like this, I didn’t expect toppings to be piled on as if they were unloaded from a dump truck. Once I removed 80% of the greens and reassembled the slices, it was better. Also, full slices of prosciutto laid flat on top are ridiculous to eat on a pizza. Since there was no sauce, the pizza itself was fairly dry, as if they skipped the EVOO. If it was there, it wasn’t noticeable. Unless you really enjoy eating a full salad on top of your pizza, I would avoid these two pies until they find a more elegant way to present and assemble them.
Overall:
Maybe I just got unlucky with my choice of pies, but I wasn’t amazed. I’d be willing to come back and try the sit-down experience and pick safer options like the traditional Thinny Thin or Sweet Cups of Spice. If next time proves to be better, I’ll revise my review. (If you like this style of specialty/craft pizza, I would recommend Cafe Crevier in Denville, it's worth the drive and hassle of finding parking.)
Extremely pleased. My wife and I were there to celebrate our 42nd Anniversary. The food was exceptional start to finish. Only think I could add is they have no liquor and we where hoping to be able to have a glass of wine with our meal. Next time we go back I will check with them if we can bring a bottle with us. Either way, we will be going back again. And thank you to the staff at Angelino's fir making our night so memorable.
