Upon first engaging with this practice, I made it a point to relay my compounding trauma history with doctor’s offices. It took me a while to physically get into the office (after multiple virtual visits with Dr. Shalili Patel. After an in-person visit, a few days later, I receive a text message that she is moving out of state and will no longer serve as my primary. I did not understand why this information was relayed via text, especially after considering how long it took me to see a primary, come in person, and build this connection. Nonetheless, I still wanted to continue giving the practice a chance. I then saw a different doctor and relayed my concerns. During this visit, a urine sample was taken where she was concerned I would be pregnant. Might I add, I have been in a committed same-sex relationship for 10 years. No response was provided as to why this could have happened. More recently, I saw a different doctor, who assumed she knew my body better than I did. I relayed concerns of an illness. She recommended a dual COVID/flu test which came back negative. She prescribed prednisone. I continued to relay that this was a different feeling and I was concerned about my breathing, or inability to breath. Nonetheless, she told me to take the prednisone. After going to the hospital last night. I was diagnosed with something that the prednisone would significantly impact. After texting them this morning with my concerns, and stating that I would be pulling myself from their office, I received no response.
It is evident that their practice operates based on kindness and smiles, rather than truly implementing trauma-informed practices (which center the voices of the individual in their treatment). I would encourage training in this arena. Nonetheless, as stated in my text, I wish this practice nothing but the best. My hope is that my experience may bring a teachable moment so that others never experience what I did.
