Great museum that has a rich history of carriages on Long Island and the New York metro area. Many variety of carriages are on display. A place that you can bring young and old. Helpful and friendly staff.
The Carriage Museum in Port Jefferson offers a delightful journey through history, showcasing an impressive collection of meticulously restored carriages. Visitors are treated to a glimpse of the past, experiencing the elegance and craftsmanship of bygone eras.
Perfect for a rainy day!
So cheap, and a great learning experience. There are multiple floors and rooms of different carriages, and sleds throughout history. One thing I really appreciated was the use of sound effects and visuals (fake fire, mannequins of humans and horses, the moving parts on a certain display, the sounds of horses with their neighs and clip clops, videos, and audio presentations).
Tips:
-park at the Long Island Museum across the street, this is where you pay as well. Inside is currently an art gallery(this changes periodically). You will get a map here of the different buildings and staff is so helpful as well.
Amazing place!
3 flors of great exhibitions! Over 100 carriages from the US and some from Europe.
The museum is part of the Long Island Museum.
We had a wonderful time looking at the historic carriages and learning about the history of them and the roads/transportation of Long Island. What a wonderful museum. They even had some carriages from William Vanderbilt that I believe I saw displayed at the Vanderbilt Museum years ago. We had the museum to ourselves and really enjoyed our visit here. We will be back again.
