This place is incredible, completely worth it. I wish I had more time to take a guided tour, but the small amount of time I had was riveting. The Park Rangers were the best and they were very accommodating despite it being so close to closing time. The enthusiasm of the lady that talked to us was infectious, and frankly heartwarming. She clearly cares about the history of the park and the base and it is a trait that is sincerely endearing. The park is really well maintained, and it was like being teleported to a different world. I loved it, wish I could have rats longer, staff was awesome, probably will go back next year.
I feel like this is a poorly visited gem. I could use some love but there is enough to see that is worth the visit. You can’t drive to it as it’s on a military base. I’m out need to park outside the base and walk in. Probably a 15 minute walk to the Visitor Center. The base itself has lots of beautiful old historic homes and a public pool.
Cool place. A small fort which is located on the shores of the bay. away from the bustle of the city. Cool staff will help you plunge into the history of the fort. There are many locations for your family in a quiet place.
Pretty sad they block the entire coast with city agencies and fences. Such a beautiful spot but coastline is entirely prohibited. The Fort and Battery is pretty much the same. Historic stone and mortar windows covered with plexiglass and bars, stairways locked off and blocked. Not much upkeep going on. Weeds and fences. The whole peninsula should be for recreation and water access and Fort featured. No one can even find it.
Very interesting place to visit. The visitor center representatives are very nice polite and welcoming. They let me “park” my baby’s stroller near them while we were enjoying this historic spot. Besides that it’s a very interesting town to wander around. There is free parking before booth entrance.
