The other day I tried, Mama G African Restaurant, for lunch. I tried their Jollof Rice w/ Chicken. I was in a stretch of NEEDING Jollof Rice after I had tried it for the first time lol. Not too long after my first experience trying Jollof Rice, along with trying different places in different areas, I had rode past this place and decided to try it out. I am not sure if it was just the time or day that I came, but I was completely disappointed. The Jollof rice was more oily than you’d probably get at most places and the flavor was extremely lacking. Not to mention the rice tasted old, and/or reheated from the day before. The chicken was a bit cold and tough, but the flavor was fairly decent. The most disappointing experience was the price. I paid over $20 for the one plate, and at the time based off of my fairly limited previous experiences, I was like “Ok, this one has to be the best at this price!”. Again I’m not sure if it was the time of day (a later lunch time ~1pm), or the day I went (a Wednesday), but the experience was just not it. I would love to try this place again, but consistency along with quality is what makes a restaurant one you’d love to go back to again and again. Maybe if I am in the area again, I’d try it. But from my only experience it was pretty disappointing. Especially given the quality of the Jollof I was experiencing beforehand (I had it about 6 times before this one). If you’re in the Newark area feel free to check this place out.
Im sure the owner remembers me. (She remembers me as (Dre) the Amazon guy 😭) When you first walk in it might seem as if she has an attitude but she’s actually pretty nice when you talk to her and she even jokes around. I Discovered this place while doing doordash. Decided to come back again and try the Egusi and pounded yams as suggested by my best friend who is Yoruba. I got the assorted meats and everything was super spicy just like i liked it. I even had meat pie on the side. I’ll just remember to specify skipping the Pomo as I cant seem to like it, but the catfish, tilapia and goat buss 😋 I will def be coming back again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was feeling hungry and my hotel doesn’t have a restaurant so I went into the Uber eats app to find something to eat. Mama G restaurant was one of the highly rated African food. I ordered pounded yam with egusi soup. It was so delicious, I had no problem with the portion but it is one piece of meat and one chicken thigh. The spice level is hot but I already knew that’s how egusi soup is. Thanks for the wonderful meal.
Food arrived well packaged, it looked good, tasted good until i went to bite into the meat and found hair, i grabbed the other piece of meat and found hair too, the other piece of (cow skin i believe) meat was coiled so the hair was inside of it. Pics included. This review is not meant to deter people from buying here but please let the chef know to cover their hair, head when preparing or cooking the meal. Threw away rest of the food. I ordered peppered meat too but havent come across hair yet. Otherwise fufu was delicious.
