The accuracy of this spot as a rear guard fortified post is disputed. From a military perspective the position is sound... this camp is on sloping ground overlooking two major Colonial roads as well as the North Branch of the Raritan River and the nearby Ford. I see clear signs of chimney remains as well as what appears to be several rock walls which may or may not have been used as fortifications. There are clearly seen depressions in the ground. It looks much like other Jockey Hollow sites with minor physical remains of huts.
I can find multiple references to this rear guard site in local history books from the 60's which gives more credential to this site as authentic. However... primary evidence is elusive and there seems to be no info on what troops would have manned this post. More than likely militia.
If anyone has more info on this site I'd love to hear
It appears that this sign is no longer there as of Oct 2022. I found what looked like the outline of a small building along the green trail (near the red trail), but I could not find the sign. The people in charge of the reserve tell me it's not there. Does anyone know otherwise?
Ok
