Definitely schedule your visit around the tour which is very insightful! Great for kids and the elderly and everyone in between. We spent about 2 hours there but enjoyed every minute of it. The ultraviolet light collection is probably one of the coolest thing I've seen
The Sterling Hill Mining Museum is a truly unique and well-run destination that combines New Jersey history, geology, and hands-on learning in an engaging way. The guided underground mine tour is the highlight. Knowledgeable guides explain not just how the mine operated, but also the lives of the miners and the importance of the site from both an industrial and scientific perspective.
The fluorescent mineral room is unforgettable. Seeing the rocks glow under UV light is fascinating and unlike anything else in the region. Above ground, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated and do an excellent job of explaining the mining processes, the equipment, and the broader impact of the industry.
This is a place that clearly values education, preservation, and respect for the people who worked there. It is great for adults, kids, hikers, history buffs, and anyone curious about how industry and geology shaped this part of New Jersey. Highly recommended and well worth the visit.
My husband, son, and I loved the Sterling Hill Mining Museum tour! Our tour guide, Brianna, was such a wealth of knowledge and brought the very interesting history of the mine to life! She was awesome! The mine was really cool to see and learn about, even better than we expected. Highly recommend a visit!
Outstanding mine tour and if you like fluorescent rocks to boot you are in for a real treat. The interior museum section is remarkable to say the least. Apparently the owner of Orexk vacuum cleaners donated his whole mineral collection. The whole experience is something you will not forget anytime soon.
Wasn’t expecting much, but what I experienced was amazing. First off the folks that work there are all so pleasant , secondly the gift shop is very reasonable and has something for your 4 year old up to museum pieces. I’ve been to many of the largest museums on the east coast and Chicago and I can definitely say this place has some of the most extensive mining artifacts and history all bundled up in two museums. The rock and mineral collections are insane. From meteorites, to a moon rock they have it all. The glowing rock displays in and out of the mines are something out of a movie. The grounds have the original equipment persevered and available to see . A steel beam from the World Trade center is also there. Our tour guide was a down to earth really fun guy whom truly understood what the mine had meant to the town and the people whom worked in it. I would recommend this place to everyone.
