I just want to Thank everyone for stepping up to make it as wonderful as it was. So Thank You All you are the Best.
My brother was recently in Whiting Gardens for about 9 weeks. I visited him 3-4 times per week, so I became very familiar with the facility (or at least, the North Wing) and its staff. Everyone in the North Wing was pleasant, caring, highly responsive, and professional. Nurses Amanda, Trish, Joanie, and Lisa were very attentive to my brother’s needs. They also readily answered all of my questions, and gladly responded to my requests for additional help or information as needed. The therapy staff - Frank, Bob, Eric, Stephanie, and Amanda - worked absolute wonders with my brother! Upon his admission, my brother had been unable to walk, or often even sit, without hunching over or losing his balance. He left the facility using a walker with with great posture and confidence. His speech has also improved dramatically.
Whiting Gardens’ administrative staff was very pleasant and helpful as well. Sarah, from Admisdions, gave me an initial tour, and then she recognized and greeted me during my visits - from just that one initial meeting. The social worker, Savannah, was a godsend!!! She acted as a liaison between me and all other staff as needed, coordinated progress meetings, and prepared my brother’s discharge plan. She also provided me with outside resources to support my brother (and me) after his discharge. I have even reached back to Savannah since my brother’s discharge, for some additional information, and she, once again, came through for me very quickly.
Last but not least, Dorothy, the weekday, front desk receptionist, always greeted me warmly, and passed phone messages from me to the appropriate parties, as needed. Also, the facility was extremely clean. It always looked and smelled fresh.
Even though my brother desperately wanted to be at home, he was in the best place he could have been to meet his needs. He felt comfortable there, and I have never felt as welcome in any other medical facility as I was made to feel there.
I had stayed at this place several times over the past 5 years. My prior stays were just okay, but this time I am very dissatisfied. I have chosen to terminate my dialysis and die a peaceful death. The other nursing and rehab facilities in the area are completely unacceptable,so I chose Whiting Gardens to live out my remaining time,
2 nurses, Tammy and Trish are over and above wonderful. The aides are a mixed bag. One aide left me sitting on the side of the bed for 2 hours, only with a hospital gown on. My call light was on this whole time. When he came back,he said he wasn't even there, and had other patients to take care of so I told him I didn't trust him to get me off the toilet in a timely manner. He said "we'll get yourself another aide.I reported him, learned he was agency. Typically agency staff come in for the paycheck and have no accountability. When I put my call light on,it usually takes at least half an hour before someone responds.
When I got here 2 weeks ago,the light over my bed did not work. After requesting maintenance for 4 days,I finally had a maintenance man come in and said that they were ordering a switch and would be fixed within 2 days. It took another week before it was fixed. Then the cold snap happened, and I was very cold because the heat didn't work. Another 4 days to get someone to turn heat on. Then the call bells were not working for 3 days and all you could do is yell "help" when I needed to have my incontinence brief changed. Yesterday they said the coffee was out for the whole building, but I was able to get some hot tea. Today the aides are coming back tome and says there is no hot water in the whole building, which I find ludicrous.
Housekeeping is basic. The lady who comes in is very nice, but a quick sweep and I have to ask if I want floor mopped.
All in all this place goes by the motto of do as little as possible, place blame on other people,or departments and pass the buck. This is not how I want to spend my last weeks of life, and I deserve better. My ex husband comes in to visit and is appalled at the conditions and called the ombudsman.. They said if heat not fixed by next day to call them back, but they were opening a case on this facility. If they have other people call they will take action. The trouble is many patients don't know or can't call them or stick up for themselves.
The other rehab/skilled rehabs in this area are even worse. So I feel stuck and have to deal with the crap around here.
