The gym seems to focus primarily on its kids’ programs and pool facilities, which appear to be the main revenue drivers. Unfortunately, this leaves the fitness area itself somewhat neglected. While the membership price ($75/month) is reasonable, the gym offers only the bare essentials for effective workouts.
Equipment maintenance is slow—broken benches can take months to repair or replace. During peak hours, the limited number of machines means everything is often in use, forcing members to wait rather than adapt their workouts.
Unlike many gyms that oversupply treadmills, Asphalt Green has the opposite issue. With only five treadmills, they’re almost always occupied during busy times, making functional or interval training difficult. Meanwhile, there’s an excess of bikes and ellipticals that rarely see use.
The gym overall caters to their kids' program and the pool, which are the money making of the business. The gym alone, although decently priced ($75/month) is neglected and has just the bare minimum for your workouts.
Benches break and it takes months to be either repaired or replaced.
Due to limited machine availability, during peak hours all machines are frequently in use at the same time, leaving no choice but to wait rather than adjust the workout.
I often complain about the exaggerated supply of treadmills in commercial gyms. At Asphalt Green is the opposite. With only 5 treadmills they are consistently occupied during peak hours, disrupting functional and interval training. Meanwhile, the numerous bikes and ellipticals remain underutilized.
The absence of machines like a Smith machine, chest/shoulder press, and incline bench has limited our ability to complete well-rounded strength workouts.
Overall, it's OK for casual gym goers - but if you are serious about your gym and strength training routine this place will quickly make you feel constrained. The neglecting of the equipment also just adds to the overall 'unwelcomeness' of the space.
The floor staff is nice, though.
Because of these reasons we had to cancel our membership, and we found a more suitable place to our needs.
Along with the UES campus, Asphalt Green has some of the best pools in NYC. Special shoutout to Lisbeth! She was incredible kind and helpful when I signed up for my membership. Really appreciate it. :)
I have been a member here on and off for over 10 years and I really love the facilities and the atmosphere. It has a nice mix of family friendly energy as well as those seeking serious athletic performance. Personally I really appreciate the necks of children, elderly, and the more serious athletic types.
