Ok, so despite the 3 stars at the time, I used this place to rent a 21ft compact+ RV for me, my gf, and my best friend to take on 1500 mile round trip for a little over a week. Being from Albany and having lived in Middletown in the past, this was the closest place I was comfortable with renting from. Nervous doesn't describe the feeling I had, never renting an RV before in my life. However, I have to say, I had one of the best vehicle renting experiences I've EVER HAD. I see a lot of complaints on here, and honestly I don't believe these are warranted towards Magyar Service Center, moreso the corporate side of Cruise America. I experienced no problems, and when I showed up I was very concerned about the payment method, so I came prepared with my rental payment available on a credit card, debit card, AND cash, just in case. They take credit cards and debit cards, so I elected to use my credit card, as the payment includes a 500 dollar refundable security deposit which I didn't want to cover with my real money. After paying and going over the quick paperwork with the nice girl at the desk, a very chill and knowledgeable dude walked us to our RV and went over everything about the vehicle we needed to know. He even showed us how to use the generator if we needed. He also answered our questions we had, namely about tolls and if we can use our own ezpass or not (you can't) and some other things about the water system. For peace of mind, we got the zero damage addon just in case we incurred any damage along the way. This is not required, but they did mention that we added that on and I feel we received better service as a result. For example, when asking about toilet paper, the guy walking us through the RV went inside and gave us multiple rolls. The black/grey septic water tanks were easy to empty, but you can leave it for Cruise America to empty and they only charge you 50 bucks if you don't want to deal with it. Most water treatment facilities have a free RV dump spot, so that's what we used.
The complaints I see from people on the other reviews appear to have to do with their poor planning or not checking their vehicle before going on vacation with it.
Before leaving Magyar Service Center with our RV, us 3 went through the RV and made sure that everything worked. Water pump, toilet pedal, lights, AC (especially), fridge, anything we would need. One thing that you need to understand is that Magyar and Cruise America are two separate companies. If you have trouble during off hours, you will be dealing with the corporate number and possibly have a foreign agent on the phone. It is what it is. If you have a problem during normal hours, you can call the service center and they will give you more personalized and possibly better help. I feel alot of the reviews are from people who have no business renting an RV or people who had problems with their vehicle that needed to be fixed that they didn't catch before taking their RV on vacation.
After coming home from vacation, we had the RV for one extra day as we wanted time to unpack and clean up after ourselves. The RV needs to be back by 11am on the day of return, so you should prepare for this or drop it off after hours early using their key dropbox and leaving a voicemail. If you don't make it by 11, I believe they charge you 25 an hour for up to 5 or 6 hours, at which point they charge you for the full day.
If you pay attention, read the stuff they give you, and use common sense, you will have zero issues renting here. These rentals cost good money, so take it seriously and check your vehicle before relying on it for use.
This place was great, I'd do it again, and they didn't jerk me around. They gave me my deposit back within 5 days which was also nice. I've had more problems renting a uhaul van!
P.S: Michael, don't blame cruise america and the service center because YOU backed your RV down a ditch while most likely drunk. They have tow trucks, you did something dumb and had to wait. Stuff happens, but that isn't their fault.
Did a week-ish rental of a compact unit as an alternative to hotel and car rental for a NYS visit. Found it straight forward to drive and park, easy to use, and a nice retreat for a busy family visit. Folks I worked with were professional and answered questions thoroughly and well (I’m new to RV). Made my camping experience on the glamping end too. Rented the bedding kit - each kit for one person. Towel too fuzzy otherwise gratefully used all in the kit.
Easy check in and check out. Office is easy to reach by phone for questions before or during rental. Semi-convenient from the city. Took the train to Beacon from Grand Central and then a quick 15min cab from there.
We had such a great experience dealing with the staff at this location of Cruise America. Especially Sue and Joe (I hope that was his name). the entire staff was pleasant and helpful. Answering any questions and reviewing the process throughly and efficiently. We were even able to extend our rental an extra day without out any hassle or fuss. This was our 2nd time renting an RV through Cruise America. So we new exactly what to look for when inspecting the vehicle and it exceeded our expectations. The vehicle at this location was newer and extremely clean. These are not a top of the line luxury vessel, but it is reliable and has a lot of storage. There are plenty rattles and creeks, from the microwave, side doors, and stove, but that’s a manufacturer issue. the price is affordable and well worth it especially if you watch the deals, they are always having some specials. The rates at this location are one of the lowest rates in the area if not the country. We drove up from Long Island and arranged to have our car parked with relatives. But they offer to park one Vehicle on premises while you travel, just call ahead to make arrangements, they really are super accommodating and friendly.
