There are two museums in separate wings of the building. One of them is the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor museum dedicated to collection and preservation of award recipients. Interactive exhibits with stories are very touching and you end up spending more time in this wing than you might have initially planned.
A must see for all. Full disclosure, I did enter my father into the database so a personal tie. Truly moving to see the sacrifices our military members of all services gave to protect our freedom. Make it a point to stop in. There is no cost for admission.
The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is extraordinary historical site that commemorates the journey of those soldiers who have received the Purple Heart. The museum guides visitors through military history using artifacts, images, video presentations, and interactive displays. Perhaps, what is the most touching part of the displays is soldiers letters chronicling their experience in battle.
The museum should be toured in tandem with the New Windsor Cantonment, which the museum shares space with. It is easy to spend a few hours here. The museum does make it possible to research family members who have received a Purple Heart. The staff was friendly and helpful. The museum is free to all and quite an experience. Check the website or call for hours and days when they're open.
Talk about a hidden gem! This museum was listed in the tour book we purchased before our Hudson River Valley vacation. We thought this would be a quick stop, but we ended up spending 2 hours in this museum alone. It is 100% a must stop. It also contains another museum on the grounds, which was also fun to explore regarding Washington's cantonment. We learned a lot about the medicines they used at the time. The men in the cantonment were in period clothing and extremely knowledgeable. Honestly, we spent a good part of our day at this site with our 10 year old son, and it was the perfect afternoon!
The team that hosted the July 4th celebrations we're amazing!! We relocated from Texas and to have our first Independence Day celebration with such great guides, could not have been more Wonderful. Truly remarkable experience all Americans must experience with their families. The expertise with the artillery and Marching is paired so well with charismatic guides, diving into a part of our history better than any story teller you've sat in front of. We will be back and with more family !
