Fantastic exhibition, very easy to enjoy; the guides are great. By the way, don’t bring little children with you. If they’re under five, they’re not getting anything out of it, and they sure make it hard on everybody else.
I have always enjoyed the history and mythology of Resident Roosevelt. Visiting his home was such a treat and the tour guide was amazing with facts about every room and facts of the man. Thank you
Make sure you purchase the tour ahead of time, you can’t buy at the door. And check if the gift shop is open, it was closed when i arrived. Plenty of parking.
A small museum with great cooling served as an escape from the summer heat before/ after the nearby hike to the beach. There's a surprisingly decent amount of history/artifacts with friendly staff willing to explain the material.
The restrooms were clean and well maintained.
I especially enjoyed the wall of junior park ranger badges as it gives a collective sense of pride.
Very nice peaceful place to visit. It's not easy getting tickets to do the house tour. Tickets for house tour need to be purchased days to weeks in advance (on home computer for best results), can not purchase onsite. That needs to be improved. The free museum is nice. The hike to the ocean is moderate level of physical activity. It has inclines & declines, so one should be in good physical condition to complete the hike. The area is mostly self guided on your own. The property can be greatly improved with more activities & experiences. Over all nice experience and area of Long Island to visit.
Great experience!!!
Theodore Roosevelt Jr. (Ted) and his wife Eleanor Alexander Roosevelt built the house they called “Old Orchard” in 1937-1938 on four acres of land purchased from Ted’s mother in the Sagamore Hill apple orchard. The Georgian style home was designed to Ted and Eleanor Roosevelt’s satisfaction by their son-in-law, Baltimore architect William G. McMillan, Jr.
Formerly the residence of Theodore Roosevelt Jr, the home now serves as a visitor center and museum.
Museum is free to visit and the Old Orchard Museum is open Thursday-Sunday from 11:00am-4:00pm. Trails and grounds open daily.
After visiting the museum you can take a nice hike in sagamore Hill nature trail. Sagamore Hill's nature trail offers scenic views of Eel Creek, a tidal salt marsh creek and Cold Spring Harbor beach, making it a great way to spend a beautiful day.
Its variety of habitats - woodlands, open fields, beaches, and salt marshes - provided for a great deal of diversity in plant and animal life.
