Do NOT skip a visit to this museum when you land on the island. I stood in a small line to get a headset (included in ticket cost) after hopping off the boat, which was easy to operate. No line to enter the museum. I was invited by a greeter to enter the theater for a 3-part movie that gave so much interesting information & history about Lady Liberty and the island itself - be sure to watch it (no extra cost), as all the exhibits you see after will make more sense.
The interactive exhibits include actual original parts of the statue, as well as tools, etc that were part of her creation. It was easy to navigate each exhibits with the headsets. After this visit, I can honestly say I learned more than I ever learned in any history class. What an amazing first visit!
A short movie is played in this museum to explain the significance of the liberty about how it was built in France, then dismantled in 132 boxes and shipped to the new york harbour to place it there and to show slavery is abolished. There is also chain present beneath the feet of the statue.
I had only seen the Statue of Liberty from afar until recently. 3 of us gals bought tickets to ride the ferry over to Liberty Island at the end of August 2025. What a treat it was! When you see Ms Liberty up close, she's a lot bigger than what she looks like from the main land! And the museum has some really interesting facts that weren't taught in school History classes. If you're ever in Newark, NJ or New York, NY I definitely recommend that you go check out the Statue of Liberty and it's museum. Newark is approximately 13 miles from the statue, but you can take a ferry to the statue from nearby Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Very affordable pricing, as well.
This is an amazing museum with a treasure of information available to learn about the history of Lady Liberty. The complementary audio guide device is also super helpful. It was sad the theater was not operational during my visit and missed it. Would have give full 5 stars. The live wall for Statue of Liberty being formed with people across the world with messages is amazing use of tech and digitisation + sending digital souvenir
If you want to see the crown you need to book tickets about a month or so in advance. Also, make sure you're on the FIRST ferry to the statue otherwise prepare yourself to wait at least an hour to catch the ferry to Ellis Island. Skip the museum inside the statue pedestal and just go to the "new" museum on the opposite side of the island, it's really cool!
