Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

As good a nature trail as youre goubg to find around here. Waterfowl thtough the winter and much more during the summer. Just be careful of ticks during late spring to early autumn. 6 miles-ish if you do the whole trail.

The trails are well maintained and bring you right along the Carmans River, with beautiful views of the water and sky. On my visit, I spotted so much wildlife — a black-and-white cat lounging on a log, a bright red dragonfly catching the sun, turtles sharing a log with a duck, and plenty of birds. I even encountered deer quietly moving through the woods, which made the walk feel magical.

The scenery is stunning — from the stone bridge over calm water to wide panoramic views of the river framed by blue skies and clouds. Even the little details — mushrooms on the forest floor, butterflies and bees on wildflowers, the shimmer of dragonfly wings — make this refuge special.

Beautiful sanctuary to many wildlife. Have to dress appropriately due to tics. Bird watching beautiful, trails are very nice and amazing people that are available to answer questions

I had a couple of hours to kill so I stopped by. The lady in the visitor center was very kind and informative. I enjoyed walking the exhibit and learning of the Wertheim NWR, the animals/natural habitat, and environmental concerns. I was able to walk a bit on the White Oak trail. The trail was very easy to navigate and was about 2 miles. I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day for the walk. There were loads of people on the trail and some families with small children who seemed to be able to walk the trail with ease. If you love the outdoors and see yourself a bit of an adventurer, check this area out. I hope to come back again.
