Dr. Julia Mathew

Dr. Mathew played an integral role in saving my life. On May 20th, 2025, I was referred to Highland Opthalmology Associates by my primary care physician after I had complained of blurred vision in one of my eyes. What I had believed to be just a bad case of seasonal allergies, turned out to be choroidal melanoma. It was Dr. Mathew who noticed the lesion, shared the information with me in a very professional and caring manner, and then assisted in setting up a same-day appointment with a local retinal specialist. Thanks to Dr. Mathew's observational skills and assistance, two weeks later, I underwent brachytherapy procedures at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. On July 2nd, I was declared cancer free. If not for Dr. Mathew, I might not be here today - some four months later - actively working, enjoying life, and being able to spend time with friends and family. Thank you, Dr. Mathew.

I recently saw Dr. Mathew after being misdiagnosed with an eye disease for 5 years at another place. She was so professional and compassionate. I explained all my worries about the misdiagnosis/other false things another Dr had said to scare me. She took the time to explain everything to me, go over my results, and completely put my nerves at ease. She went over all of my test results with me to show that I do not have the problems I had been diagnosed with previously. After seeing Dr. Mathew, I feel such a weight lifted off my shoulders. I had already gotten a 2nd opinion that said the diagnosis was wrong, but I heard that she is one of the best ophthalmologists you can go to, so I didn’t feel comfortable until I had her confirm it. I can’t say enough good things about her, I am so appreciative of her skill and bedside manner.

I made an appointment at Highland Ophthalmology for a second opinion after receiving some subpar care. I was immediately blown away by Dr. Julia Mathew and Dr. Joe Szwartz’s vast knowledge and professionalism! They took their time, listened and addressed all my concerns. I have never felt more welcomed in a clinical settling. I feel like they took care of me as though I was family! I am forever grateful for their dedication to patient care and to me! I will be sure to recommend Dr. Mathew and Dr. Szwartz to all my friends and family! Thank you to Highland Ophthalmology for such a fabulous experience!
