Great cebiches, tuna tartar excellent... and the sangria is the best
I came here with my family after they raved about their rotisserie chicken, and I was blown away! The ambiance of the restaurant gives off a really cool, hip vibe -- from the large double doors at the entrance to the accent brick wall with cool artwork. When we went on a weeknight the restaurant was relatively quiet but given the acoustics of the room I can imagine it being very loud and energetic on a busy weekend!
Back to the rotisserie chicken. I believe this is what they are known for and I completely understand why! This was easily one of the best tasting chickens I've ever had out at a restaurant (and we like to go out to eat!). In fact, the chicken was so good I ended up ordering seconds (not sure if I have ever done that?)! It was so incredibly juicy, flavorful, tender, and the skin was crisped perfectly. The seasoning was delicious. I also couldn't believe how quickly they brought everything out! I highly recommend ordering the Peruvian combo so you can sample both dark and white chicken pieces along with a variety of sides (a light avocado salad that complements the chicken well and french fries). We ordered an extra side of maduros (sweet ripe plantains) and they were nicely sweetened and caramelized. They paired really nicely with the chicken and other sides. There is a pourable aji verde (green sauce) on the table. It makes for a great dipping sauce with everything on the table but just keep in mind that it is a bit spicy. Still good though! We ordered a few drinks (martini, sangria) that were also very well prepared.
*Note: I didn't try any of the other dishes so I can't personally speak to them, but they do offer other Peruvian classics such as different kinds of ceviche and lomo saltado.
The food in itself made the experience here a great one but we were also impressed by how kind and attentive the staff working there was. They were helpful with our questions, were very attentive to the table, and were kind and personable in general.
It's interesting because the restaurant feels really hip and trendy at the same time as being down-to-earth with food that feels homey and comforting. I live out-of-town but would come back here on my visits back to Long Island in a heartbeat. Thanks for a great dining out experience on my visit back home!
TLDR: It's that same Pio Pio you know and love. Personally, this might be my favorite location. If you've never been, Matador Combo.
I've been going to Pio Pio for almost 20 years. As expected, they've finally expanded to Long Island in Glen Cove.
Looks like the one in Jackson Heights but taller ceilings and less noisy. This might be the first time it was not someone's birthday (IYKYK) during service.
It was just the wife + I so we stuck with the Matador Combo. If you've never had it, you get their famous chicken, an avocado salad, salchipapas (fries + hot dogs), plantains (sweet or savory) and rice/beans.
We got a glass of sangria which is always classic and I tried the Marucaya (passionfruit) Sour and both were very tasty. I felt like the food comes out here FAST and the chicken was HOT. Possibly the best experience I've had at Pio Pio since the very first time I tried it in Jackson Heights. When they were in the tiny space that Amaru is in before they moved across the street.
We'll probably go to this one from now on. Everything from the space, service, drinks and food were perfect. It's not that often when I leave a restaurant and everyone box was checked but tonight it was. I'd like to come back with more people so I can try some of the other items on the menu.
The food here is top-notch. They are easily the best Spanish restaurant in the area, or maybe even in the entire Nassau County. The dining room is spectacular, and the staff is very welcoming. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for magnificent eats in the area. It’s so good, you might just get addicted!!
