Temper your expectations from the Instagram hype and you’ll have a good time. Big parties recommended. Portions are HUGE, taste is so fresh, and they serve very promptly. Favorite cold sides were: Cabbage, cilantro, cucumber, pig ear, tofu skin, soft tofu with century egg. Favorite mains were: goose stew, fish stew with glass noodles, whole roasted Lamb obviously. They give you tupperware and foil but definitely recommend bringing your own as well. Bring your own drinks (your own ice and coolers too) as they only give water.
Remember it’s a farm… and it’s definitely NOT your cute sterile wedding venue Airbnb experience, so dress warmly and wear durable boots. Bathrooms are kind of rough and smell like farm animal. Vibe is very much a Chinese banquet style family run establishment. They have karaoke. If you have ever been to an Asian banquet hall you know the deal: drink, sing, eat and play board games, cards or mahjong to pass the time between eating.
My fiends and I went today to try this place. Totally recommend- every plate they brought out was delicious. And the lamb, oh my gosh. It was tasty, moist and the skin super crispy. There was so much food, everyone (8 of us) took food home. It was a fun and fantastic experience. Beautiful farm and amazing hosts!
Good for a unique dining experience with large parties.
This is a unique place and experience. Our group had a great time and the food was excellent. The yurt was comfortable, beautifully decorated. There’s a karaoke machine, cards and mahjong. You can interact with the farm animals.
Our favorite dishes were the lamb and beer duck. Rich is flavors, tender meat. The spicy cabbage and potato was good but the potato was undercooked. The only dish we didn’t enjoy was the beef and radish stew.
The beef was tough, radish wasn’t cooked all the way and not much flavor. The food is heavily seasoned which is great but also oily and can be salty on its own. Main dishes are served in dishes, you eat out of paper plates. They provide a pitcher of water but after everything is served no one checks on you, you have to find someone for refills.
I was told rice, fried noodles and the buns were staple food and provided but they were not served with our meal. I had to ask for them halfway through eating. The rice was the bottom of the rice cooker, not fresh and the fried noodles were pre packaged.
Making reservations is difficult if you cannot speak Mandarin. I found texting to be a better form of communication. I got a response later in the evening, they’re probably busy in the day time. Not all of my questions were answered probably due to communication barrier.
They have restrooms available onsite. You are allowed to bring your own drinks, alcohol, desserts.
Overall I thought it was a great experience. I have told my friends and family about the place and shared ways for them to have a better experience.
Some off putting things that may be an isolated incident for our group but just so the public is aware. I booked a month in advance right before this place went viral on IG. Called the number and the mandarin speaking wife gave the phone to her husband that can speak English, he gave me directions to follow.
I chose an early afternoon time slot per their website, paid the $300 deposit, sent proof and received an email that my reservation was confirmed.
I called a week before reservation just to make sure everything was in order, the wife told me she didn’t have a reservation under my name because I did not personally confirm with her and now the day was fully booked. The communication wasn't really that cordial but I credit this to language barrier so I extended my patience.
She moved things around and gave us a late afternoon time which I appreciated. But the 20 in my group had to change their schedules because of this. In the end some couldn't make it, some of us traveled from the west coast and were looking forward to this for a month.
There was never any apology or usual customer service to remedy a situation that was not my fault. I also did not appreciate that after paying a bill that about $1500 she asked me for a larger tip despite not providing any type of service besides bringing the food in and packing the leftovers. Tips are reserved for good service. We had to constantly ask for things the entire night.
I love and support small family owned businesses and this place provides a special and unique experience to the area. I hope that my experience is a one off and they can improve in customer service.
This place is good for large parties to make it worth the price.
Journeyed to a hidden gem of a farm/culinary experience in New Paltz, NY / it was an enjoyable meal and experience to break bread in a yurt / whole roasted lamb cooked in a pit along with several other dishes / produce is grown and livestock raised on the the same grounds near the three available yurts (tents) / the hosts were very welcoming and gracious
