I did a TI clinic in New Paltz about 2 months ago as a struggling adult-onset swimmer. Betsy Laughlin was a terrific instructor, providing a calm space and the groundwork I needed to even learn swim technique in the first place. I've since blended TI strategies on drag and balance with US Masters swimming classes, Sheila Taormina's book on the pull, and youtubes on breathing and more. So thankful for these teachers and their knowledge. The complexity of water and trying to swim in it have become a joy.
I wanted to learn how to swim laps for ongoing fitness, since I was never on a swim team-- I can swim, technically, but it's not a thing of beauty. More importantly, I could never get the breathing part right-- I would be fine for a lap or two, but then be exhausted. I never felt relaxed and I knew I could be potentially doing so much better, not to mention making it easier for myself. So after extensive research, I found Total Immersion, and read up on the books and got the gist of it, but knew I needed some hands-on coaching.
I contacted the team and talked with Fiona, and we scheduled a block of time where I could spend a few days with her and have a one-on-one workshop, which sounded perfect. I unfortunately do not live near New Paltz, which is a shame, because it is an absolutely lovely town-- so, a quick plane ride and rental car later, I'm learning new ways to swim that I never would have put together.
The techniques make sense but to me were not initially intuitive, but after some practice I could really feel the difference in the efficiency. While it will take me a lifetime to hone these skills I've learned, I really feel grateful for having spent the time researching and traveling to gain this knowledge.
Highly recommend the Total Immersion method and Fiona is a wonderful coach and all around awesome person. 5 stars!
My kids (6 and 4) made tremendous progress using the total immersion method. Within a few weeks they were doing freestyle and beginning on breast, butterfly and backstroke.
I was so impressed with the method that my husband and I signed up for lessons! Even though we are both experienced swimmers (I was on a team for 5 years and my husband was a lifeguard) we both got a lot out of the lessons. With some tuning on our form, our swimming is much more efficient. I would highly recommend!
I spent a great day with Alice in two sessions. The first was in the indoor pool and the second in the outdoor pool. After several years of self study using TI books and videos, Alice was able to assure me that I was on the right path and she was able to correct some issues and give instruction to improve my freestyle stroke and breathing. She really gave me a lot to work on when I got home and inspired me to plan another road trip next year to continue my TI experience. TI has made swimming fun and I would recommend it to anyone.
